WWII USAAF Pilots Navigation case. Named P-47 Pilot with original service history documents
Here we have a unique piece of history. A named Pilots Navigation case complete with his original full service history
Named to Wayne E Bortz of the 9th Air Force who flew P-47's as part of the 409th Fighter Squadron until his transfer to the 509th Fighter Squadron.
Bortz enlisted on the 9th November 1940 as a 1st lieutenant in the Army. He served in various locations in this capacity until 1943 when he underwent flight training. It was not until 5th February 1945 that he undertook combat missions in Europe. By the end of the War he had flown 27 combat missions in the European theatre including bombing, strafing and defensive operations for which he was awarded the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and the European Air Medal with 2 Battle stars. Bortz then served in the National guard for a short time before becoming a successful businessman, until his death on the 8th October 2014. Details of post war life are available via Google Search
The original paperwork in this file outlines his service history and includes notifications of appointment and awards and also consists of his early flight training records.
As seen from the photos there is a substantial amount of original documents which make a fascinating read. I have not conducted any further research into his combat history other than that shown in the documents
There has been some water damage to a few documents, as shown, but nothing significant. Condition of the Pilots case is as shown and the zip works as it should.
This is a rare original time capsule of a pilots service history, who flew combat missions in Europe.
Any inspection welcome
