WWII Merlin Exhaust stub. Lancaster Bomber with history
Rolls Royce Merlin Exhaust stub from Avro Lancaster PB812
This aircraft was lost on 10th February 1945.
The crew were flying a Navigation Exercise and whilst on the leg from Luton to Scunthorpe, a catastrophic accident occurred. At 15:50 hrs the Lancaster was witnessed by some local schoolboys in a vertical dive over the village of Caythorpe and crashed near Love Lane close to the railway station. None of the crew survived
The crew are all buried at the Cambridge City Cemetery and a wall plaque is displayed at St Vincents Church Caythorpe with another is displayed in Love Lane Caythorpe near the crash site
As can be the seen the exhaust stub is in good condition with only the bottom flanges rusted.
The Rolls Royce Merlin part number can be clearly seen.
This item was recovered from the crash site in the early 1970's
